Just setting up quests does not guarantee that students will be interested in completing them. We have to get their attention by offering a variety of quests that appeal to their interests and learning styles while still including the necessary content. Once we get their attention we Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-1493120452981853732012-04-20T17:22:00.001-05:002012-04-20T17:22:07.787-05:00
I finished the quests to learn the GameLab interface. I still have a lot of other things to do and I have just barely begun to plan my quests. This summer will be very busy organizing the lessons and developing the quests. I've had a couple of other teachers give me resources but not too many. Maybe once I make a presentation in June there will be more Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-78537865654536423602012-04-11T18:47:00.002-05:002012-04-11T18:59:42.592-05:00Transferring Game Characteristics to the ClassroomThere are eight characteristics that have been identified for a good game. They are:ChoiceFailure-lot of it in games. You learn from it by going back and trying again until you succeed.Progress Bars-you see what you have completed and how much further you have to goMultiple long and short aidmRewards-all successful efforts are rewarded with experience points (XP)Prompt-feedback is meaningful Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-22333199425408683292012-04-09T14:02:00.002-05:002012-04-09T14:19:32.878-05:00RoadmapsI spent a couple of hours between today and yesterday trying to layout a roadmap for the Gamelab project. I came up with badge names that work well with my activities (well actually there are no activities right now-just a concept) but for the life of me I cannot come up with experience point (XP) level names. Here's the roadmap visually and in a spreadsheet. There's still a lot more to do. I'm living on my anti-inflamatory to keep my hands from hurting too much. One thing I'm finding a challenge is dealing with the non-linear method of learning. I'm in two sections Academy and Teacher Camp. I complete the preliminary quests in The Academy which opened Teacher Camp. I was working in there and at one point I went back into The AcademyCherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-65234143761766142942012-04-05T09:28:00.002-05:002012-04-05T09:37:32.877-05:00Narrative Games-Graphic AdventureI am currently working on a quest about narrative games. I thought that would be a good choice to get an idea of different kinds of games before I start planning my own quests.I was playing the game "Peasant's Quest" It's a pre-Zelda kind of game. Players have a story to follow and puzzles to solve. It would be good for students who like to think things through. It also requires good memory Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-6343331412355242372012-04-04T19:23:00.002-05:002012-04-04T19:43:32.591-05:003D GamelabIt's been a long time since I posted. Last summer I discovered 3D Gamelab and really liked the concept of gamification. I couldn't afford the training at that point in time, but when they announced they were going to offer another session I jumped on the chance to participate.3D Gamelab is a way to add a gaming overlay to the educational curriculum. I will be doing the same as last year.Next month, I am presenting again at PESDHH. I am showing some of the new software and ideas that I saw when I was at NTID in June. There are some really awesome things going on. The Clerc Center is using a new technology called Voice Thread. I plan to use it with my deaf student Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-11795313181348605232008-08-21T17:41:00.002-05:002008-08-21T17:44:43.033-05:00This School YearI finally found out what I'm going to be doing this year. I will spend the beginning of the day with a deaf middle schooler and then go over to the elementary school and work with Kindergarten to Second grade kids with hearing loss. Hopefully I will be able to use more technology with them.Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-11794032331668429122008-08-05T21:14:00.004-05:002008-08-21T17:41:27.659-05:00Death of a DreamI finally got an email telling me I did not get the job. I had kind of figured that out based on what had been posted at the website. Despite my doubts about how I could manage to move and almost thinking no way, I was realllllllly disappointed that I didn't get it. I think this was the last chance to do this kind of job. Relocating will not be an option in the future. Right now we are tryingCherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-65177696343749711992008-07-31T23:33:00.002-05:002008-08-01T00:07:30.684-05:00This SummerI would apologize to those of you who are not Christians, but my Christianity is part of me and has a large influence in my life. This post delves into my career but also has some religious aspects to it. Read on if you are willing. This summer I have interviewed for three different jobs. One was where I already work as a teacher. They are hiring a classroom teacher of the deaf, so I applied Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-66933168112476452392008-07-21T20:35:00.002-05:002008-07-21T20:51:32.188-05:00Now What?Well, I have pretty well accepted that I will never be able to do the job I really want to do-instructional technology in a deaf school. But there is a part of me that still hopes I think. When I got my weekly information list that includes job postings from deafed.net I found myself looking for a technology job. Found a cool one in software development with Vcom but it is only temporary and Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-26876993039694596122008-07-21T20:32:00.001-05:002008-07-21T20:34:51.445-05:00Interview for a Classroom PositionI interviewed at my current place of employment for a classroom teacher position. I think it went well except.......My supervisor was really happy with the way things went this past year and that will actually work against me. He's not sure he wants to change the status quo.Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-61731140626901386262008-07-14T16:59:00.002-05:002008-07-14T17:11:33.824-05:00I survived the interviewI survived the interview today. It was conducted in American sign language because the two teachers that were also there were deaf. There were only a few places where I was not quite sure what was being asked. The bad news is that if I were offered it, it would be almost a $10,000 pay cut. I don't see how I could manage that despite the fact that I would really like the job. I would not haveCherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-90239541555392520822008-06-23T21:27:00.003-05:002008-06-23T21:41:42.513-05:00Job InterviewI have a job interview at Pennsylvania School for the Deaf on July 14. I'm not extremely nervous about it despite the 1 1/2 hour interview-probably because I don't see how they can pay enough. I am stressed over the idea of changing jobs. I have a secure job-and I am applying for a classroom teaching position (it may be only 1/2 day but that is fine-can keep the middle school that I have now.)Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-77152717025549820142008-06-23T21:15:00.002-05:002008-06-23T21:27:06.577-05:00Poster SessionI finished the poster session at the International Symposium-Technology and Deaf Educaiton. I gave out 60 brochures about Kool Kids SignJust the first day I have seen some awesome presentations. Two were most striking. I am not ready. I have done no videotaping for the story yet. Hopefully I can get together with Gay this week and get a few days done so I can show what it will be like. I also still need to work on the worksheets for the story. I may ask a friend to help with that. I may go back and redo some of the video but it's ready for my poster session this month. It's at:http://www.games.koolkidssign.com/Princessgame/The Missing Jewels story is online without video. I'll make a couple pages of video before the conference to show what it will be like but I won't get it finished before the conference. The story is at:http://Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-76841072589079276302008-05-15T21:12:00.002-05:002008-05-15T21:26:36.209-05:00And even more-the job huntI receive several newsletters related to the Deaf. Included in them are various job postings sometimes. Well this week I got one newsletter and in it was listed a job as an Instructional Technology Facilitator at the school for the Deaf closest to me in this state (New Jersey is actually closer) Next newsletter which is only jobs and resumes also has it listed. And finally it was listed on Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-74994526203043994242008-05-15T21:07:00.002-05:002008-05-15T21:12:29.320-05:00And There's MorePESDHH, which I presented at two years ago-I think of it as the time that if it could go wrong it did-will be held again this year. It will be at Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) and we will have access to their computers. I have been encouraged to submit a proposal for a technology training. Not sure what I will propose. There are so many possibilites and I have 90 minutes or Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-78488510438505685722008-05-15T20:41:00.002-05:002008-05-15T20:47:01.110-05:00Missing Jewels Game and StorybookBoth the game and storybook are finished except for the sign language videos. I hope I am meeting a friend on Monday to make the video for the game. She is going to try to make the story videos too but she feels she is more English than ASL so it may not work out very well. The story may have only a few pages done for the NTID International Symposium but at least it will give the people an Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-86700003691173324252008-04-09T19:37:00.001-05:002008-04-09T19:39:04.767-05:00A Lot's Been HappeningThe game story is finally finished and I've been very busy creating the 3D graphics. It's not done yet-still need to add sign language to it but here's a link. http://www.games.koolkidssign.com/stories/The_Missing_Jewels/I'm having problems with the pages that have scrolling on them. I could only get a scroll bar to work in input text mode which isn't the greatest solution since it is possible Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-4238058407211478412008-04-09T19:21:00.002-05:002008-04-09T19:33:32.064-05:00The Best YetThis June is the last International Symposium Technology and Deaf Education. When they asked for proposals I submitted the Kool Kids Sign ABC game and the in works color game for a poster session. I was accepted. I will be "presenting" on the Monday of the conference. I can't wait. Perhaps this will open a door to a technology job in Deaf education. I'd be torn though. I haven't done any videotaping yet because I decided to have the story signed too. It is an absolutely wonderful story and will make the game more fun. While I was waiting for the story to be finished I started working on illustrating it. The graphics I had gotten to use for the game would not be Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14394088.post-50281515958867532592007-08-19T08:05:00.000-05:002007-08-19T08:11:30.438-05:00Solve One Problem and Another AppearsWell, I solved that problem. I needed to have a separate tile for each of the letters in all of the words. New problem-some of the color words have double letters. I can't set it so that the double letters can go into either place in the word-they just bounce back to their starting point. If I tell it one letter to one place then the child could spell the word right but then it would tell Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15943217577813702818noreply@blogger.com0
